Qdos Entertainment Group are delighted to announce that they have raised in excess of £1 million for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity – helping to fund a suite of operating theatres at the hospital which are due to open at the end of this year.

Qdos Entertainment Group are delighted to announce that they have raised in excess of £1 million for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity – helping to fund a suite of operating theatres at the hospital which are due to open at the end of this year.

  • Total fundraising now exceeds £1m after bumper year across panto and theatre venues
  • Qdos has now supported Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity since 2010
  • Funds will go towards a new suite of specialist operating theatres, opening at the end of 2017

The entertainment group has enjoyed a partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital since 2010 when the charity became Qdos’ nominated partner charity as part of the Theatres for Theatres appeal. The group has been fundraising continuously via its subsidiary companies Qdos Pantomimes and HQ Theatres with the total amount raised now in excess of £1m.

The money will go towards the hospital’s state-of-the-art brand-new operating theatres in their new clinical building, designed to treat children with complex medical needs Funds have been generated in a number of ways – through collections at Qdos’ annual pantomimes around the UK and at charitable events organised by theatres in the HQ portfolio. Individual staff members across the group have also played a huge role by taking part in marathons, bike-rides, mud races, skydives, bake-sales and through a host of other fundraising initiatives. During the past 12 months alone, the money raised topped £160,000.

Nick Thomas, Chairman and founder of Qdos Entertainment Group said: “I’m enormously proud of the efforts of every single person who has done their bit in helping us to reach this fantastic milestone. Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is a cause close to my heart and I remain humbled by the fabulous work that they do at the hospital and the phenomenal spirit and dedication of their staff.

The combined generosity of literally thousands of people – from the simple act of throwing loose change in to a bucket right through to jumping out of a plane - has helped us to reach this landmark total. My heartfelt thanks go to those who have contributed - and to our staff across the group whose commitment to the cause over a number of years has been superb. We’re not finished yet! We’re re-affirming our commitment to the hospital and plan to continue raising money for them through 2017 and beyond.”

Having now concluded the Theatres for Theatres appeal, the next phase of fundraising will see contributions going towards an IMRI (Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging) suite at the hospital. This vital facility will enable neurosurgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital to conduct scans mid-operation for the first time, without taking the child away from the operating table. It will transform brain surgery by giving surgeons real time data to ensure they can deliver the best outcome for each patient as well as limiting the need for further surgery.

Tim Johnson, Chief Executive, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity said; “We’re very grateful to Qdos Entertainment for their continued support. Thank you to all Qdos staff, customers and suppliers for their incredible generosity. The money raised will make a huge difference to seriously ill children from across the UK. This is an amazing achievement and we look forward to working with Qdos in the future”

Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer, in partnership with theatres across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, have been at the forefront of staging Relaxed Performances since 2015 allowing audiences of all abilities to enjoy the magic of pantomime every festive season.

The 2017/18 season will see audiences from across the United Kingdom experience pantomime, some for the very first time, in over 30 of their productions packed full of laughter, special effects and spellbinding fun in a setting suitable for everyone, for audiences as far north as Aberdeen to Plymouth in the south.

Audiences attending these Relaxed Performances will enjoy all the magic, sparkle and lavish production values a Qdos pantomime offers, with modified elements to suit the sensory and access needs of patrons and catered towards people with special needs or those who may otherwise find attending the theatre challenging. Regardless of patrons’ needs, Qdos and its partner theatres are committed to creating an environment that welcomes them to experience live theatre and the magic of pantomime with their friends, families and school groups.

In working closely with each partner theatre and each pantomime company, each production is modified to adapt its suitability for audience members. House lighting is often kept on to allow patrons to feel more comfortable or move about the auditorium, volume levels are reduced so there are no loud bangs, interaction between the stage and the audience is revised and certain language is modified. Partner theatres also encourage talking and noise in the auditorium without judgement, often creating spaces for patrons to have some time away from the production if they wish and create visual stories sent out to patrons in advance in order for them to become familiar with what they can expect at a pantomime performance.

Michael Harrison, Managing Director of Qdos Entertainment: “I’m delighted we’ve been at the forefront of staging Relaxed Performances of our pantomimes, and as our venues have increased for the 2017/18 season it’s wonderful we can extend the number of Relaxed Performances across our season to allow a much wider audience to enjoy one of our shows. They’re also a wonderful opportunity for families with very small children to experience pantomime for the first time in an environment where noise and movement doesn’t matter, it’s all part of the fun and we encourage it.”

Since then she has forged a television career and has starred in Pauline’s Quirkes for Thames Television as well as Angels, and Shine on Harvey Moon. It is, however, her role as Sharon Theodopolopodous in the long-running comedy Birds of a Feather for which she is best known, a role she has played to hilarious effect for over 27 years on screen and on-stage.

The role, which won her a British Comedy Award for Best Newcomer led to subsequent roles in Maisie Raine and Down to Earth for the BBC, a BAFTA nomination for her role in mini-series The Sculptress and the role of Hazel Rhodes in the long-running ITV soap Emmerdale, which she played for two years. Most recently, in addition to reprising her role in Birds of a Feather on a UK stage tour and for ITV, Pauline played Susan Wright in popular drama series Broadchurch.

In addition to her acting work she opened the Pauline Quirke Academy (PQA) in 2007 with the intention of running drama classes for children interested in performing, helping them grow in confidence and follow in her footsteps. Today, PQA has over 100 schools teaching over 8,000 children comedy, drama, musical theatre, film and television every week across the country.

Playing opposite her in the role of Dandini, Prince Charming’s aide, is Charlie Quirke, Pauline’s Birds of a Feather co-star. Having trained with the National Youth Theatre Charlie made his television debut aged 12 in the BBC One medical drama Casualty and a role in the feature film Arthur’s Dyke. In 2012 he toured the UK with his mother and her TV co-stars in the live stage production of Birds of a Feather playing the role of Travis Stubbs, a role he has since reprised for the television series.

The Beck Theatre’s magical production of Cinderella will be produced by One From The Heart in association with HQ Theatres, the partnership behind previous record-breaking pantomimes at the Theatre. The show will be brought spectacularly to life with an abundance of comedy, sensational song and dance numbers, fabulous costumes and stunning scenery plus, as pantogoers have come to expect, plenty of audience participation.

Theatre Director Louise Clifford said: “With Pauline Quirke at the top of this year’s bill, and ticket sales already ahead of last year, we know that we’re going to have another huge pantomime success on our hands. The Beck has a wonderfully intimate auditorium which makes for a truly magical pantomime experience, perfect for lots of Booing and Hissing!”.

Pauline and Charlie will star in Cinderella at the Beck Theatre from Friday 9 to Saturday 31 December 2016. Book tickets today for the greatest pantomime of them all at becktheatre.org.uk or by calling the Ticket Office on 020 8561 8371.

Fresh from winning the tenth series of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, Lance Corporal Richard Jones will be making magic in this year’s Swansea Grand Theatre’s pantomime Sleeping Beauty, which opens on Friday 9 December 2016.

After joining the British Army in 2010 and studying at the Royal Military School of Music, Richard entered this year’s series of Britain’s Got Talent where he amazed both judges and audiences with his range of close up magic tricks and illusions, even leaving Simon Cowell lost for words on several occasions.

With over 2.5million people voting, Richard was crowned the winner in May and has gone on to appear on numerous television programmes, was requested to perform as a bandsman in the Trooping the Colour as part of Her Majesty Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations, and will appear in front of senior members of the Royal Family at this year’s Royal Variety Performance as part of his Britain’s Got Talent prize. This summer Richard makes his West End debut in the magic and illusion spectacular Impossible! at the Noel Coward Theatre. Playing the role of Merlin the Magician, Sleeping Beauty marks Richard’s pantomime debut.

Swansea Grand’s Grand Dame of pantomime Kevin Johns MBE makes his 19th consecutive panto at the venue as Queen Keviana. Niki has performed extensively as a solo vocalist and toured the UK as Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers, as Paulette in Legally Blonde and starred in a number of critically acclaimed pantomimes. Also back by popular demand, the hilarious funny man and panto favourite Matt Edwards returns to Swansea in the role of Muddles, having last appeared at the Grand Theatre in 2014.

Produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s largest pantomime producer, Sleeping Beauty’s executive producer Jonathan Kiley said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Richard, Brendan, Kevin, Niki and Matt together for this year’s spectacular line-up.
